Long after his trial David was diagnosed with autism and mental retardation, as well as severe paranoia and other symptoms of trauma resulting from the abuse he suffered as a child. One doctor described David this way:
"On a good day he functions emotionally and socially like a ten-year-old. Under stress he's four or less."
